Bridge to Terabithia, Way to Growth

Jess Aaron, the only boy in a poor family of five children, lives in rural southwest Virginia. In the beginning of the novel, he is fearful and depressed. His mother favors his sisters while his father is busy with work.

May Belle Aaron, Jess’ second younger sister, is the only person who adores and admires Jess in the family. However, Jess doesn’t want to play with her at first. Leslie Burke, Jess’ neighbor, is a new comer whose family moved to this town not long ago. She is outgoing, active and naïve. She happens to be Jess’s classmate and becomes his best friend later.

Things begin to change when Jess meets Leslie at the sports meeting. Jess is supposed to win the championship; however, Leslie ranks first in the race at last. Jess stares at the strange girl with curiosity. There the story goes.

Everyone in school is curious about the new comer Leslie, so does Jess. Sometimes the classmates would make fun of Leslie, for she doesn’t have a TV at home, but only a sea of books. What’s more, she shows great talent in writing composition. Her composition is read by the teacher among the whole class. All these things seem to be very strange.

Every day, Leslie, Jess and May Belle take the same bus to school and return home together. One day Leslie gives Jess a piece of chewing gum, showing her friendliness, and Jess accepts it. Then they become close friends and always play together. Jess shares his secret love of drawing, and Leslie shares with Jess her love of fantasy stories.

One day after school, Leslie and Jess don’t return home immediately. Instead, they venture into the woods and swing across a creek on a rope, finding an abandoned house on the tree on the other side, as well as a broken down truck.

They create a totally new world, and Leslie calls it Terabithia. They name themselves King and Queen. “Prisoners of the Dark Master, hear me! We are coming to free you. Do you hear us? Show me that you hear us!” Leslie says. I was greatly moved when I read this part. How naïve they are! It reminded me of my childhood. I can’t help thinking what we’ve got and what we’ve lost as we grow up.

There is no doubt that I would go back to my childhood where I would be so carefree if I had a time machine. And I wonder whether I would be free again, because the reality is after all harsh. What a pity! Taking a deep breath, I know I should take the responsibility and there are so many things waiting for me to accomplish. Just let it go!

In this wonderland, they enjoy themselves, ease the pressure in daily life and learn many things from this kingdom, like opening mind and being brave as well as strong-willed. Growth is already starting to happen on both of them. Most importantly, Jess is becoming outgoing and optimistic gradually.

However, the misfortune is just around the corner. One day when they play together as usual, it begins to rain cats and dogs. Therefore they should return home. “See you!” Leslie turns round, saying and smiling. I have never thought this good-bye means an eternal separation. I promise Leslie’s final smile is worthy of remembering for a life-long time.  Unfortunately, Leslie passes away before long when Jess attends an art exhibition. Leslie falls into the creek and is drowned as she wants to swing over.

Jess is so desperate. He deals with the grief by returning to the Terabithia alone to make a memorial wreath for Leslie. His younger sister May Belle tries to comfort him, yet she fails at first. It is after a long time that Jess starts to walk out of the sorrow. The friendship between Jess and Leslie gives Jess power to face the pain, helping him to rediscover his strength and build up his confidence towards life. He builds a wooden bridge above the creek and invites May Belle to join this kingdom as a new Queen. Jess realizes that while no one could ever replace Leslie, Terabithia must have a Queen and Leslie would agree.

Here the story comes to an end. Taking a deep breath again, I can’t calm down, and the feelings in my heart are so complicated.

In my opinion, Leslie is exactly an angel, coming to help Jess out of depression. As has mentioned above, Leslie is gifted in writing. She writes: “I’m moving gently forward, over the wild and beautiful, unexplored world below me. I'm floating in silence, and breaking it up with the sound of my breath. Above me, there's nothing but shimmering light, the place which I've come from, and will go back to when I am done here.” That is to say, she comes from the heaven and when she finishes her task she should return.

This is a story about friendship, love and growth. In the real life, there would always be such a person coming into our sights, and then becoming our friends. We enjoy being together and learn from this guy, which we call growth. I remember one of my best friends in senior high school, from whom I gained the power to bear the hardship and loneliness. He told me “Don’t hide; don’t be afraid of the dark. Follow the light then you can find way out.” I really thank this guy as well as the hardship that helped me to be more independent and strong-willed, without whose help I might have stayed depressed and desperate forever. Just as Mint. G writes in his novel Rush to the Dead Summer, “Thanks that girl for teaching me to love. Thanks that boy for teaching me to grow up.”

This is also a story about naivete and pursuit. Leslie has passed away, but the Terabithia would be passed down). Jess has found his bridge to Terabithia, but where are ours? The dreams are wonderful but the real life is after all harsh. However, there is a common ground that being brave to face the difficulties and troubles, and to fight for your tomorrow is important. When you are tired, just “close your eyes and keep your mind wide open” and build a bridge to the wonderland to rest. Keep your mind wide open, then you can find peace and get your heart purified. Therefore, you won’t get lost in this complicated world.

In a nutshell, this story tells us something about friendship, childhood, love, pursuit, naïveté and dream. All these things value a great deal in our life. Due attention should be paid to keep these things in mind, so that we can enjoy ourselves no matter what tomorrow will be.
