What if Your Life was Routine?

However mean your life is, meet it and live it; do not shut it and call it hard times. It is not bad as you are. --- Henry David Thoreau

You wake up at 6:30; you know what classes you have to attend today; you make up a whole schedule this weekend... Everything you do is being well-arranged. Then all of a sudden you realize that you are in a situation in which life is boring because things are always done in the same way! You are trapped in an endless hole --- routine!

Want my advice? You are definitely in need of breaking through routine. To begin with, you need to keep up with the pace of life: keep yourself busy. As Benjamin Franklin once put it, “Sloth, like rust, consumes faster than labor wears.”  It is not routine itself but the attitude you have towards that matters, so there is no point in getting depressed about it now.  A favorite quote of mine by Louisa May Alcott in Little Women says: “While we wait we may all work, so that these hard days need not be wasted.” Despite the difficulties, the March girls are busy in dealing with life bagatelle happily. Life is not a matter of counting the days. It’s making the days count. Keep yourself busy. Tomorrow is unknown, for it could be bright or dull. So the only alternative is work hard today, and we will enjoy a better life. The busier you are the less harm you will be apt to get into, the sweeter will be in your sleep, and the better satisfied will the world be with you.

A daily routine is predictable and sometimes even tedious. Despite your drive and success in your life, you don’t feel like a whole, happy person. That’s because you stop being curious, for everything around you has become a ritual. “God finds himself by creating,” as Tagore once said. Under no circumstance should you lose your curiosity. To be curious, you need not be afraid of new things, and try to explore the unknowns, go further and widen your horizon. You don’t want to just sit around where you know everything because it stops being interesting and inspiring after a while. You want to have new things which happen to you and meet new people who can inspire your innovations and you can have fresh ideas constantly.

So if you think your life is routine, do not trouble yourself much to complain about it. “Just find out what you want to be and do, and take off your coat and make dust in the world,” as Robert Jones Burdette wrote in Advice to a Young Man.
